How long it takes

The mock mine, the main attraction, takes about 45 minutes according to the museum. The permanent exhibition covers more than 3,000 m2 and you choose your own route, so the time is up to you; the website gives no overall duration. If you come by car, the museum has its own large free car park, with room for cars and coaches.

What children see

The mock mine starts in the cage, the miners' lift that recreates the descent into the depths. From the landing, the museum's guides lead you through more than 1,000 metres of galleries showing how techniques and machines changed from the 19th century to today. It reproduces a real working, with iron arches, timber props and the heavy machinery of real shifts, and you walk it in darkness with sound effects. The museum describes it as safe, educational and suitable for all ages.

Upstairs there are working machines, films and hands-on exhibits, fossils and minerals, the lamp room, the miners' infirmary and small hospital, and the Asturias Mine Rescue Brigade (1912). The headframe on the façade doubles as a viewpoint over the Nalón coalfield, and behind the building there is about a hectare of green space. Family rules: children stay with an adult at all times, the display cases are not to be touched, and photos are allowed without a tripod, except on guided tours.

And the train? The museum's website describes no train inside its mock mine. If what you are after is a ride on a mine train, that is the one in the Samuño valley, covered in this guide. Nor can you visit the Pozo San Vicente next to the museum today: its page says it is closed to the public and that they are working to open it.

Getting there

The address is El Trabanquín, s/n, 33940 El Entrego. By car, according to Wikipedia, you get there from Gijón and Oviedo on the AS-1, the Autovía Minera, and the A-66, and the museum's free car park is waiting. By train, the C-5 line of Cercanías Asturias, from Gijón to Laviana, stops at San Vicente, which Wikipedia describes as the museum's halt; the next stop towards Laviana is El Entrego-La Oscura.

If you are torn between the museum and going down a real mine, the comparison is in Pozo Sotón or MUMI?.
