Gijón city bus lines 1, 2, 18 and express 71 go to the Laboral, stopping at the Universidad Laboral stop; line 1 is the most frequent, every 12 minutes on working days and every 15 on Saturdays and public holidays. By car, leave the A-8 at kilometre 385 towards Viesques; there is a public car park.
The Laboral is in Cabueñes, on the east side of Gijón, far from the promenade and the old town, and many people arrive wondering whether they need the car. You do not: four bus lines stop at the door and one of them runs every few minutes. This is what you need to know to get to a tour, a theatre show or an exhibition, and not end up at the wrong door.
Where it is
The address is calle Luis Moya Blanco, 261, postcode 33203, according to Spain.info; the street is named after the architect who designed it. It is in the Cabueñes area, next to the Hospital de Cabueñes and opposite the Jardín Botánico Atlántico, which a Gijón City Council document places right in front.
Asturias airport is about 40 kilometres away, according to the official Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura website.
By bus: the four lines that stop at the door
The stop is called Universidad Laboral. According to the official website, four lines of EMTUSA, Gijón's city bus, stop there: line 1, between El Cerilleru and the Hospital de Cabueñes; line 2, between El Corte Inglés and Cabueñes; line 18, between Nuevo Xixón and Cabueñes; and express line 71, between Gran Capitán and Cabueñes.
They do not all run equally often. According to the timetables published by the City Council, line 1 runs on working days every 7 to 10 minutes between 7:00 and 9:00 and every 12 minutes between 9:00 and 21:50, and on Saturdays and public holidays every 15 minutes: that is the one to take. Line 18 runs every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 on Saturdays and public holidays; line 2 every 30 minutes on working days and every 40 on Saturdays and public holidays; and express line 71 every 30 minutes Monday to Friday, from 7:00 to 21:30, with no service on Saturdays or public holidays.
There is a fifth, line 35, which also stops there, but only on school days, early in the morning and at midday; it is no use for a visit. A useful detail: on all these lines the previous stop is called Jardín Botánico, so if you are seeing both places you get off at one and back on at the other.
By car
The official website gives the access from the A-8: take the Ronda, leave at kilometre 385 towards Viesques and from there follow the signs to the Hospital de Cabueñes. There is a public car park and a charging point for electric cars; the website does not say how many spaces it has or whether it is paid, so we will not make it up.
If you are not driving, the same page gives three taxi numbers: Radio-taxi Gijón, 985 14 11 11; Villa Jovellanos, 985 16 44 44; and Ciudad de Gijón, 985 34 66 66.
What is inside today
The Laboral is no longer a huge school, but it is still full of people who are not visiting. According to its website, inside are the Asturian public broadcaster, RTPA, in the former convent of the Poor Clares; LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial; an integrated vocational training centre; the Jovellanos Faculty of Commerce, Tourism and Social Sciences; the Professional Conservatory of Music and Dance and the Higher School of Dramatic Art. That is why you see students crossing the square on weekdays.
LABoral Centro de Arte has its own entrance, at Los Prados, 121, and entry is free with prior registration, according to its website; its phone number is 985 185 577. It is a different visit from the guided tour of the building.
The theatre, the church and the tower viewpoint are separate: the church and the viewpoint can only be seen with a guide and a ticket. This autumn's times and prices are in the guide to the guided tour and the tower climb, and the building's history in the Laboral, from miners' orphanage to culture.
A tip for the day
If you arrive on line 1 on a Saturday, expect waits of up to 15 minutes on the way back. And if you want to add the Botanic Garden, look at the joint ticket first: the Laboral and the garden are sold together and you do not have to see them on the same day.
