What to do in Gijón when it rains: free museums, the Aquarium and what opens on Mondays

If it rains in Gijón, the easiest indoor plans are the Railway Museum, the Aquarium, the Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés, the Casa Natal de Jovellanos and the guided tour of the Laboral. The municipal museums are free and close on Mondays; that day the Aquarium opens from 10:30, and the Laboral has a tour at 17:00 until 31 October.

A rainy day in Gijón does not have to spoil the trip: the city has four municipal museums with free entry, an aquarium that opens every day and a vast building you can tour inside. The catch is the calendar: almost everything shuts on Mondays and some museums close at midday. Here is what to know to plan the day.

Where to stay here: Mi pequeño rincón en Pumarín (Gijón) · sin ascensor · From 68 € per night · min. 12 nights →

First: check what day it is

The municipal museums you visit under cover, namely the Railway Museum, the Muséu del Pueblu d'Asturies, the Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés and the Casa Natal de Jovellanos, close every Monday of the year, according to Gijón City Council's listings. If the rain falls on a Monday, two covered plans with fixed hours remain.

The Aquarium opens every day from 10:30. And the Laboral runs a guided tour Monday to Friday at 17:00 until 31 October 2026; from 1 November to 20 December, on weekdays there is only a Friday tour at that time, plus weekends and bank holidays at 12:00 and 17:00.

A whole morning in the west: trains and fish

The Asturias Railway Museum and the Aquarium share buses: lines 1, 4, 6, 12 and 16 stop at both. It is the easiest pairing for a wet day, because you go from one to the other without crossing town.

The Railway Museum is free and, from October to March, opens Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 to 18:30, and on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays from 10:00 to 18:30, with no midday closure. The exhibition fills three buildings and a large open track yard, so in heavy rain stay in the halls and leave the tracks for a dry spell.

The Aquarium charges: general admission, ages 15 to 64, is 21.50 euros; children aged 3 to 14 pay 13 euros, and under-3s go free. From 13 to 30 October it closes at 18:30 Monday to Thursday and at 19:00 on Fridays, weekends and bank holidays; from 3 to 30 November, at 18:30 every day. The ticket office and entrance always close an hour earlier. If you are going with children, the guide to the Aquarium with children explains how to split the morning.

Roman baths and Jovellanos's house, with a lunch break

The Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés, in the heart of the old town, are visited along a walkway that passes the original rooms of the baths. The Casa Natal de Jovellanos, on the plaza de Jovellanos, holds the city's art collection. Both are free and share the stops of bus line 4, Plaza del Carmen and Instituto.

Here the opening hours matter more than the weather: both open Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 19:30, and on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 19:30. Between two and five in the afternoon they are shut, so the sensible thing is to see one in the morning, have lunch nearby and leave the other for the afternoon.

A warning for anyone coming at the end of the month: the City Council says the Termas will be closed from 27 to 31 October 2026 for maintenance.

The Muséu del Pueblu: free and open through midday, but bring an umbrella

The Muséu del Pueblu d'Asturies is free and, from October to March, opens Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 to 18:30, and on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays from 10:00 to 18:30. Bus lines 1, 4 and 10 serve it, at the El Molinón, FIDMA and Rastro stops.

It helps to know what it is like before you go: it covers a wooded site of 35,000 square metres and the collection is spread over several buildings, some of which, such as the manor houses, the cider press, the hórreos and the granaries, are part of the exhibition themselves. Inside you are under cover, but to get from one to the next you have to cross the grounds.

Inside the Laboral

The guided tour of the Laboral lasts 75 minutes, takes at most 30 people and goes through the plaza, the theatre and the church before going up to the tower viewpoint. It costs 6 euros full price and 4.50 reduced, which applies, with proof, to children aged 4 to 11, over-65s and other groups; children aged 0 to 3 go free.

In bad weather expect changes: the official website warns that the route may be altered, among other reasons, because of adverse weather. For getting there, the guide on how to reach the Laboral goes through it line by line.

What is no use right now

The Museo Nicanor Piñole is listed on the City Council website as temporarily closed for building work, even though its page still shows the usual hours. While that lasts, do not count on it for a rainy day.
