The Mirador de La Providencia: a Ship Run Aground Above Gijón's Cliffs

Photo: David Álvarez López · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons

The Mirador de La Providencia is in the Cabo San Lorenzo park, east of Gijón: a viewpoint shaped like a ship run aground, opened in 1997, with views from Cabo Peñes to Punta L'Olivu. Bus lines 14 and 25 stop at Providencia, and it lies on the path from El Rinconín to La Ñora.

East of Gijón, past El Rinconín, the coast rises into cliffs, and above them there is a viewpoint that looks like the bow of a ship run aground on the grass. It is the Mirador de La Providencia, in the Cabo San Lorenzo park, a good place to look at the sea and wait for the sunset. What you see from the top, what is around it and how to get there without a car.

A ship aground on an old firing range

The Cabo San Lorenzo park, in the parish of Somió, was built on reclaimed military land. The regional government commissioned the design from the architect Ángel Noriega Vázquez and it opened in 1997. Its best-known feature is the viewpoint, which imitates a ship run aground.

A bunker remains from the military past. The city's walking guide recalls that this was a firing range and describes it today as «superbly reclaimed». Around it there is parking, a children's play area and paths that run down the grassy slopes to the cliff edge.

What you see from the top

According to the same city guide, from these headlands the view takes in much of the central Asturian coast, from Lluanco and Cabo Peñes to Punta L'Olivu, near Tazones. Looking back you see the whole of Gijón: the bay, the port and the city.

Directly below is Peñarrubia beach, with a towering cliff of Jurassic layers, the so-called Rodiles formation, which turns golden when the sun hits it, especially at sunset; hence its name. Off the park lies La Fontica, also called Isla La Tortuga.

Two sculptures and some irises

Beside the path, facing La Fontica, stands Homenaje a Galileo Galilei XV, by Amadeo Gabino, placed in 1997: two large Corten steel structures about three metres tall. Next to the viewpoint there is another, Paisaje germinador, by Miguel Ángel Lombardía. In spring, where water seeps to the surface, yellow irises come out.

The chapel of the Black Virgin

A few metres away, on the Colina del Cuervo, is the chapel of La Providencia. It was designed by the municipal architect Enrique Álvarez Sala and inaugurated on 26 May 1946, on the site of the vanished hermitage of San Lorenzo de Mar. After a collapse it was fully restored between 1986 and 1987.

Inside it keeps wax votive offerings left by devotees of the Virgin of La Providencia, the Black Virgin to whom many people in Gijón pray for favours, and its pilgrimage festival draws crowds. Nearby there is a plaque with the poem «Asturias» by Rosario Acuña.

Getting there

By bus, lines 14 and 25 stop at the Providencia stop. By car, take the GI-2 road towards the La Providencia hermitage and, just before the chapel, the road to the park turns off to the left.

On foot, the viewpoint is one of the stops on the coastal path from El Rinconín to La Ñora, which starts next to the Emigrant's Mother statue at the end of the seafront promenade.
