You reach Pola de Laviana by train on the C-5 Cercanías line, which leaves Gijón and ends at Laviana station; from Oviedo, take the C-2 and change at El Entrego. There is also an Autos Sama bus from Plaza de Europa in Gijón, just over an hour, and by car you enter the valley on the AS-1 and the AS-17.
Pola de Laviana, La Pola Llaviana in Asturian, is the capital of the municipality of Laviana and the gateway to the Redes Natural Park from the Nalón valley. Without a car you can get there from Gijón by train or bus; from Oviedo, by train with one change; and by car, on the road that climbs through Langreo. This is what the official sources say today about each option.

By train from Gijón: the C-5 to the end of the line
The simplest way is the C-5 line of Cercanías Asturias, run by Renfe. It leaves Gijón (Sanz Crespo) and ends in Pola de Laviana: the last stop is called Laviana, and the one before is Barredos. There is no need to work out where to get off: you get off where everyone else does.
The whole line, with its history and what to see at each stop, is in the guide to the Gijón–Laviana train. One practical warning here: parts of the line have been covered by bus during works. In July 2026, according to the Government Delegation in Asturias, Renfe laid on almost a thousand bus services on the C-4 and C-5 lines during Adif works. Before setting off, check the notices and that day's timetable on the Renfe Cercanías Asturias website.
By train from Oviedo: change at El Entrego
There is no direct line from Oviedo to Laviana. Turismo Valle del Nalón points to the Oviedo–El Entrego line (the C-2) for reaching the valley from the capital. At El Entrego-La Oscura station that line connects with the C-5, which carries on to Sotrondio, Blimea, Barredos and Laviana.
The change is within the same station, but the two timetables do not always match: search the whole journey, Oviedo to Laviana, on Renfe's journey planner.
By bus from Gijón
Autos Sama runs a bus from Gijón, from Plaza de Europa, to Pola de Laviana. On the way it stops in La Felguera, Sama, Ciaño, El Entrego and Sotrondio, so it also works for anyone heading to other towns in the valley.
According to the timetable the company publishes, checked in October 2026, on weekdays the first bus leaves Gijón at 7:00 and the last at 22:30, with departures almost every hour; some run only in school term. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there are eight departures, between 9:45 and 22:30. The journey takes just over an hour: the 8:45 arrives in Pola de Laviana at 9:50.
Autocares Mariano also lists a line between Gijón and Pola de Laviana on its website, leaving from the old Feve station. For both companies, the safe source for times is their own website on the day.
By bus from Oviedo
Here the official information falls short. The Turismo Valle del Nalón website mentions a bus line to Oviedo, but the link it gives leads to a domain that is up for sale. The sensible option is to search the journey on the Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias planner, which brings together the region's lines, or to take the train with the change at El Entrego.
By car
Turismo Valle del Nalón explains that the main road into the valley is the AS-17, with Langreo as the reference point, and that from Gijón the main route is the mining motorway, the AS-1. Pola de Laviana lies further up the valley: the Gijón bus passes through La Felguera, Sama, Ciaño, El Entrego and Sotrondio first.
From León there is another way in, from the top: the N-625 to Riaño and the CL-635 mountain road to the Tarna pass, which leads straight into the Redes Natural Park.
A warning: on the Saturday of the Descenso Folklórico del Nalón, in August, parking in the town is the problem of the day. We cover it in the guide to the Descenso del Nalón.
From Asturias Airport
The airport is in Castrillón, 40 kilometres from Gijón and 47 from Oviedo, according to Aena. There is no direct bus to the valley: Alsa links the airport with Avilés, Gijón and Oviedo, with daily departures between 6:00 and 00:00, roughly every hour, according to the airport's website.
The easiest route is airport to Gijón and then the C-5 or the Autos Sama bus from there. If you hire a car at the airport, you can drive via Gijón and the AS-1.
Once in the town
The station and the bus stop both leave you in the town. What you can see on foot, from El Otero to La Chalana, is in what to see in Pola de Laviana and around. To carry on to Redes without a car, the bus connection from the town is explained in the train guide.
