Hospital Valle del Nalón is in Riaño, in Langreo. There is no station of that name: Cercanías line C-2, from Oviedo to El Entrego, stops at Peña Rubia and Barros, and the C-5, from Gijón to Laviana, at La Felguera Nuevo Langreo. The bus routes that stop at the hospital are on the Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias website, and by car the AS-I and AS-III pass Riaño.
Anyone with a relative admitted to Hospital Valle del Nalón, with appointments several weeks running or starting work there makes the same journey again and again. Here is exactly where it is, which train and bus serve it, how to get in by car and what is published, and what is not, about visiting.
Where it is: Riaño, in Langreo
The hospital is in Riaño, Riañu in Asturian and in its official name, one of the parishes of Langreo. In the Asturian Health Service's tender notices published in the BOE, such as the one from October 2011, the address is given as Polígono de Riaño, s/n, 33920 Riaño-Langreo.
According to Wikipedia, Riaño is about 3 kilometres from La Felguera, linked to it by a footpath that runs through Barros, and people in Langreo use the names Riaño and Villa interchangeably for the same place. The hospital officially opened in 1978 as the Residencia Nuestra Señora del Rosario, in a building shaped like a three-pointed star; in the 2000s an annexe was added for outpatient clinics.
Who it serves and what changed in 2025
It mainly serves the five municipalities of the Mancomunidad del Valle del Nalón: Langreo, San Martín del Rey Aurelio, Laviana, Caso and Sobrescobio. For decades it was the hospital of health area VIII.
That map changed with the Principality's Decree 86/2025, published in the BOPA on 30 June 2025 and in force three months later: the eight health areas were reorganised into three. The Nalón municipalities now sit in Área III Oriente, headquartered in Gijón, with Hospital Universitario de Cabueñes as its reference hospital. Valle del Nalón is listed in its District 2, alongside Cabueñes and the Hospital del Oriente de Asturias Francisco Grande Covián, and a BOPA resolution of July 2026 confirms that Área III takes over the powers of the former area VIII (Langreo).
The decree itself says district hospitals join the new organisation without losing the identity of their own centre: this is still the valley's hospital. If your relative is referred to Gijón, the guide on getting to Cabueñes covers buses and visiting.
By train: there is no Riaño station
No Cercanías line has a station called Riaño. On Renfe's Cercanías Asturias map of June 2025, line C-2, from Oviedo to El Entrego, stops at Peña Rubia, Barros, La Felguera, Sama and Ciaño; Peña Rubia, according to Wikipedia, is one of the settlements in the parish of Riaño. The C-5, from Gijón to Laviana, stops at La Felguera Nuevo Langreo/Nuevu Llangréu and Sama Los Llerones.
We have not found the walking distance from those stations to the hospital door in any official source, so we do not give one: check it on a map before the first day. From Oviedo, the C-2 runs straight into the valley; from Gijón, the C-5 is explained stop by stop in the guide to the Gijón–Laviana train.
By bus
The Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias has a section on its website, among its most requested services, called «Hospital Valle del Nalón», which gathers every route that stops there, just as it does for Cabueñes or for the HUCA in Oviedo. That is the place to check which bus leaves from each municipality and when.
We do not copy that list of routes here: the website shows it through its search tool and we have not been able to check it route by route, and a badly copied bus timetable does more harm than none.
By car, and parking
According to Wikipedia, two regional dual carriageways pass Riaño. The AS-I, the Autovía Minera, links Gijón with Mieres through Langreo, and two of its sections are precisely Mieres–Riaño and Riaño–Siero. The AS-III, the Autovía del Acero, which will one day link Avilés with Riaño by doubling the AS-17, has had the section between Posada de Llanera and Riaño open since July 2025.
As for parking, neither the SESPA nor the hospital publishes spaces, rules or prices on its website. If you will be going every day, the practical thing is to ask at the information desk on the first day.
Visitors and companions: what is written down
Visiting hours do not appear on any official website we could find: each unit organises them in its own way and you confirm them on the ward. Nor have we found the hospital switchboard on a current official page, and we do not copy it from third-party directories.
What is written down is the framework. The SESPA page on rights and duties, based on the Principality's Health Act 7/2019, recognises the patient's right to be accompanied, with special consideration for minors, people with disabilities or severe cognitive impairment, women in labour, people with serious mental illness and people at the end of life. And the right to make suggestions and complaints and to receive a written reply.
If you are spending weeks in the valley
The dead hours between visits are enough to get to know the place. Among the blocks of flats in Riaño there are still, according to Wikipedia, the church of San Martín, the Casa de los Dorado, the Palacio de Camposagrado and the Torre de Villa, the last two listed as heritage of cultural interest. La Felguera is about 3 kilometres away along the path.
What there is in the rest of the municipality, from Ciañu to the Samuño valley, is in the guide on what to do in Langreo, and for an unhurried meal, the cider houses of the Nalón.
Checked
Checked in October 2026 against: the Hospital Valle del Nalón notice in the BOE of October 2011, Decree 86/2025 on the Health Map (BOPA of 30 June 2025, text published by the INAP), the BOPA resolution of July 2026 on the Área III management, Renfe's Cercanías Asturias map (June 2025), the Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias website, the SESPA rights and duties page (updated on 30 August 2024) and Wikipedia (Hospital Valle del Nalón, Riaño, Autovía Minera and Autovía del Acero) for history and roads. Visiting hours, the switchboard and parking do not appear in any of them.
