Cabueñes University Hospital in Gijón is served every day by EMTUSA routes 1, 2, 10, 15 and 18, and by the express 71 on weekdays. From Oviedo, the C-1 Cercanías train runs to Gijón-Sanz Crespo, where you take the 18. By car: the A-8, the Ronda and exit 385 towards Viesques.
If you are keeping a relative company in Cabueñes, or going in for treatment several days in a row, you make the same journey again and again. Here is which bus to take and how late it runs, how to get there from Oviedo, what to expect with a car, and what is written down, and what is not, about visiting.
Where it is and which number to call
Cabueñes University Hospital (Hospital Universitario de Cabueñes) is at calle Los Prados, 395, in Gijón, and its switchboard is 985 18 50 00, according to the directory of the Principality of Asturias Health Service (SESPA) on astursalud.es. Any question about a particular unit starts there.
It sits in the Cabueñes area, on the east side of the city, next to the Universidad Laboral and the Atlantic Botanical Garden, and it is the last stop on several city bus routes.
Which city bus to take
According to the EMTUSA timetables published by Gijón City Council, routes 1, 2, 10, 15 and 18 end at the Hospital de Cabueñes stop and run every day, and the express 71 runs on weekdays only. Route 35 only runs on school-term weekdays: towards the hospital between 7:20 and 8:20, and back between 13:20 and 14:20.
The most frequent are the 1 and the 10. The 1 runs from El Cerilleru to the hospital via Begoña and the Villaviciosa road, roughly every 12 minutes on weekdays between 9:00 and 21:50, and every 15 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The 10 starts in the south of the city, crosses the centre at the plaza de L'Carmen and El Parchís and climbs through Somió, at about the same rhythm: 12 minutes on weekdays and 15 on holidays.
The 15, between Nuevo Roces and the hospital, runs every 12 minutes on weekdays and every 15 on holidays; the 18, from Nuevo Gijón, every 15 and every 30; the 2, from El Corte Inglés, every 30 and every 40. The express 71 leaves Gran Capitán every 30 minutes on weekdays, from 7:00 to 21:30, and does not run at weekends.
For evening visits, the last bus matters. On weekdays the last 1 leaves the hospital at 22:21 and the last 10 at 23:10; on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the last 1 leaves at 23:00. These are approximate times, and EMTUSA itself asks passengers to confirm them in its app or on the displays at the stops.
From Oviedo and elsewhere in Asturias
We have not found a direct bus from Oviedo to the hospital on the website of the Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias, the regional transport authority, so the journey is done in two legs. By train, the C-1 Cercanías line links Oviedo with Gijón-Sanz Crespo station, according to Renfe's map of June 2025, and in Gijón route 18 has a stop called Sanz Crespo on its way to the hospital. By coach, the Consorcio runs services between Oviedo and Gijón, and in the city route 10 has a stop called Estación Autobuses, though only on the way back.
The Consorcio does group the intercity routes that stop at the hospital on its website, under «Hospital de Cabueñes». And since 4 May 2026, according to a note from the regional government, three of the eight daily services between Ribadesella and Gijón stop at the hospital and at the Universidad Laboral, and an express line from Llanes, with two return trips on weekdays, also stops there. There were already extra services from Cangas de Onís, Parres, Piloña, Nava and Siero.
By car, and the parking problem
The website of Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, the hospital's neighbour, explains the way in: the A-8 motorway towards Gijón, the Ronda ring road, exit at kilometre 385 towards Viesques and, from there, follow the signs for the Hospital de Cabueñes.
As for parking, neither the hospital nor SESPA publishes spaces or rules on its website. The most recent thing we found dates from July 2025: according to Redacción Médica, the regional government asked Gijón City Council for a plot in the northern part of the site for a temporary car park while the stalled extension works restart, which the Health Department expected for the end of 2026. For anyone going daily, the bus has fewer unknowns.
Visiting and companions: what is written down and what is not
Visiting hours are what people search for most about Cabueñes, and the honest answer is that they are not published on any official website we could find. Each unit organises itself in its own way, and the place to confirm is the ward itself or the switchboard.
What is written down is the framework. Asturias's Health Law 7/2019, which SESPA summarises on its rights and duties page, recognises the patient's right to be accompanied, with special consideration for minors, people with disabilities or severe cognitive impairment, women in labour and people at the end of life.
The same page recognises the right to make suggestions and complaints and to receive a written reply. The page does not say which desk handles them: ask at the hospital's information point.
Around the hospital, for the empty hours
The Universidad Laboral and the Atlantic Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico Atlántico) have their own stops a few stops from the hospital, on routes 1, 2 and 18; what is inside and how to visit is in our guides on getting to the Laboral and the Atlantic Botanical Garden.
On its way, the 10 runs through Somió and has a stop by the Museo Evaristo Valle, and the 2 and the 18 cross Viesques and the university campus.
Checked
Checked in October 2026 against: the EMTUSA timetables for routes 1, 2, 10, 15, 18, 35 and 71 published by Gijón City Council, SESPA's directory of health centres, SESPA's rights and duties page (updated 30 August 2024), Renfe's Cercanías Asturias map (June 2025), the website of the Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias, the regional government's note of 1 May 2026 on transport to the hospital from the east, the access page of Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura and Redacción Médica (8 July 2025). Visiting hours are not published in any of them.
