Gijón in September: the weather, which beaches have lifeguards and what festivals are on

Gijón in September keeps almost all the sunshine of August: AEMET gives an average of 17.4 degrees and 170 hours of sun at the Asturias Aeropuerto station. The town beaches have lifeguards until 15 October, 8 September is the Día de Asturias and Cimadevilla holds its festival at the start of the month (from 4 to 13 September in 2026).

People looking up Gijón in September usually want to know three things: whether you can still go to the beach, what the weather is like and whether there is a festival on. All three have answers in official sources. AEMET gives September almost as much sunshine as August, the Ayuntamiento keeps lifeguards on the town beaches until mid-October and the Cimadevilla neighbourhood holds its festival at the start of the month. What does not fall in September is the Fiesta de la Sidra Natural, which is in August.

The weather: AEMET's figures

The nearest official reference with a full table of climate normals is AEMET's Asturias Aeropuerto station, in the municipality of Castrillón, 127 metres above sea level. It is not the city, but it is the central Asturian coast, and its 1981-2010 figures give a fair idea.

In September the average temperature is 17.4 degrees, with average highs of 21.2 and lows of 13.7. There are 73 litres of rain per square metre spread over 8.3 rainy days, 170 hours of sunshine, and the table counts 4.2 clear days and 3.3 days of fog.

The interesting part is comparing it with the months either side. August averages 18.8 degrees, 60 litres and 182 hours of sun: September keeps almost all of it. The jump comes in October, with 116 litres over 11.5 rainy days and 130 hours of sunshine. In other words, September is the last month of summer weather on this coast, and it is worth packing something warm for the evenings.

The beach: who is on duty and until when

The 2026 bathing season ran from 1 May to 15 October, but the hours change within September. From 1 to 15 September, San Lorenzo had lifeguards every day from 10:00 to 20:00, and L'Arbeyal and Poniente from 12:00 to 20:00. From 16 September to 15 October all three town beaches had the same hours: daily, 11:30 to 19:00.

The surprise is on the eastern beaches. Los Mayanes, Cervigón, Peñarrubia and Estaño only had lifeguards from 15 June to 31 August, from 11:45 to 19:15. From 1 September there is no lifeguard on those beaches, so for swimming it makes sense to stick to the town beaches. What the tide does at San Lorenzo is explained in the guide to San Lorenzo's tides and stairways.

The Cimadevilla festival

Gijón's September festival belongs to the old upper town. Turismo Asturias dated the 2026 Cimadevilla festival from 4 to 13 September. According to its listing, the programme each year includes the traditional opening speech at the Casa del Chino, street parades, concerts in the neighbourhood squares such as the Cuesta del Cholo, the Plaza de Jovellanos and the Plaza de la Colegiata, dance bands in the marquee on the Cerro de Santa Catalina and parades of carnival big-heads.

It is a neighbourhood festival, in narrow uphill streets, and it is best enjoyed on foot and at an easy pace. If it is your first time up there, the walk through Cimadevilla in order helps you find your way between the squares.

8 September, Asturias Day

8 September is a holiday throughout Asturias: the BOE lists it as a regional holiday, the Día de Asturias. In 2026 it fell on a Tuesday and in 2027 it will fall on a Wednesday, according to the official lists of public holidays for those two years. For visitors, it means a public holiday in the middle of the week, with what that implies for shops and errands.

Agropec: the country fair at the end of the month

At the end of the month comes Agropec, the fair of farming, livestock, forestry and fishing. In 2026 it was held from 24 to 27 September at the Recinto Ferial Luis Adaro, in its 40th edition, with more than 800 animals from 55 breeders: hens, pigeons, rabbits, horses, ponies, sheep, pigs and goats, according to Turismo Asturias. With children it is one of the most rewarding plans of the month.

What is open and when

The Jardín Botánico Atlántico keeps long hours in September: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00. Watch out for Mondays: the garden only opens on Mondays in July and August, so in September it closes on Mondays again. In October the hours drop to 10:00 to 18:00. An adult ticket costs 2.90 euros, 12 to 26-year-olds and over-65s pay 1.80, and children up to 11 go free.

The Museo del Ferrocarril de Asturias, which is free, keeps its April-to-September hours throughout September: Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 19:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 to 19:00. It closes every Monday. From October it opens Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 to 18:30.

If you came for the cider

Gijón's Fiesta de la Sidra Natural is in August, not September: in 2026, the 35th edition ran from 20 to 30 August, according to Turismo Asturias. Arrive in September and you have missed the festival, but not the cider, which is poured all year round; what you need to know to order it is in the guide to cider culture.
