To work remotely for free in Gijón, the best option is the Biblioteca Pública Jovellanos: wifi throughout the building, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 21:00 and also on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The municipal network has 11 libraries with free wifi; El Llano has a 120-seat study room.
Anyone spending a few weeks in Gijón working remotely has more room than you might think, and for free. The municipal library network has 11 libraries, all with free wifi and open access, and right in the centre there is a public library that also opens on Sunday mornings. For something more permanent, the city council rents out coworking spaces through its public company. These are the opening hours, checked in October 2026.
The one with the longest hours: the Biblioteca Pública Jovellanos
It is at calle Jovellanos 23, in the restored building of the former Banco de España, where it moved in 1991. It opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 21:00; on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00; and on Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 14:00. It closes only on 1 January and 25 December.
It has wifi throughout the building and a room with daily newspapers and magazines, as well as a collection of 200,000 items. It is not part of the municipal network, but it is the best fit for long office hours. The El Parchís stop, next door, is served by EMTUSA lines L4, L10, L14, L20 and L25. Its holdings include much of the library of the Ateneo Obrero de Gijón.
The municipal libraries: wifi for everyone and open access
The Red Municipal de Bibliotecas de Gijón/Xixón has 11 libraries spread across the neighbourhoods. According to the city council, all of them have free wifi for connecting your own devices, and access is open and free. A card is only needed to borrow books: the council's citizen card or the Asturias library network card both work.
The four neighbourhood libraries below also have a media room with computers and free broadband internet: 16 workstations at La Arena, El Llano and La Calzada, and 11 at El Coto. Handy if your laptop fails one day or you need to print something and have no printer to hand.
Four neighbourhood libraries for a full working day
From October to May, these are the ones open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 20:00, with no midday closure. La Arena, in the Fábrica del Gas park, with lines L10, L14, L20 and L25. El Coto, on plaza de la República, with lines L1, L2, L4, L15, L16 and L18.
El Llano, in the Centro Municipal Integrado on calle Río de Oro, is the best equipped for working: it has 86 reading places and a study room with 120 more, and it also opens on Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00. La Calzada, in the west, also opens on Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00.
Watch out in summer. From June to September hours are shorter and vary by day: El Llano, for example, opens Monday to Wednesday from 9:00 to 15:00 and only stays open until 20:00 on Thursdays and Fridays. The timetable for each season is on the council's library network page.
Council coworking: the Gijón Impulsa spaces
Gijón Impulsa is the brand under which the city council's public company supports entrepreneurs and businesses. It runs a network of business premises with more than 23,000 square metres for rent, including coworking, offices and private rooms, spread across the city centre, the business parks and the Milla del Conocimiento Margarita Salas.
It is not a room you can simply walk into: it is aimed at freelancers and companies and you apply through a rental application, with the rates published on the council website. Its incubators, such as the Cristasa and Impulsa buildings, include shared rooms, cleaning, security and wifi. The office is open from 9:00 to 14:00 on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9:00 to 17:00 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Fibre at home: what the Ministry says
For working from your accommodation, the most recent official figure is the broadband coverage report from the Ministry for Digital Transformation, with data as of 30 June 2025: fibre to the home reaches 95.92% of Spanish households. In addition, Spain's copper xDSL networks were switched off for good on 27 May 2025.
The same report explains that fibre coverage can be checked by municipality on the Ministry's portal. Even so, coverage in a street does not guarantee the connection in a particular flat, so the sensible thing is to ask your accommodation for a speed test before booking.
Checked
Opening hours and services checked in October 2026 on the Gijón city council's pages: the library network, the La Arena, El Llano, El Coto and La Calzada libraries, the Biblioteca Pública Jovellanos and Gijón Impulsa with its business premises page. Fibre figures from the report Cobertura de banda ancha en España en el año 2025, published in March 2026 by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service.
