To walk from Roses to Cadaqués you follow the GR-92: the coastal path from the Roses lighthouse, the coves of Lledó, Murtra and Rostella, Montjoi cove, the Norfeu col and Jóncols cove. The Cap de Creus Natural Park puts it at 20.4 kilometres, 695 metres of climb and about 8 hours. To get back, Moventis line 12 links Cadaqués and Roses.

You can walk from Roses to Cadaqués along the coast. It is the GR-92, which leaves the port of Roses as a coastal path, passes the lighthouse and a string of coves, crosses the Norfeu col and drops into Cadaqués from above. The Cap de Creus Natural Park puts it at 20.4 kilometres, with 695 metres of total climb and about 8 hours of walking. It is not a stroll: it is a whole day of coves, scrub and sun.

The route

The park's route sheet starts at the port of Roses, by the free car park on the lighthouse road, and has you follow the GR-92 along the seafront towards the lighthouse. From there the coastal path passes the beaches of Canyelles Petites and Canyelles Grosses, also known as L'Almadrava, and strings together the coves of Lledó, Murtra and Rostella.

Next come Montjoi cove, the Norfeu col and Jóncols cove. From Jóncols the path climbs to the Sa Cruïlla col, which looks out over the bay of Cadaqués, and then drops into the village; the sheet places a viewpoint over Cadaqués at 182 metres. The route is waymarked as a GR, has no fixed equipment and the park lists it as walkable all year.

One small thing worth knowing early on: at the Lledó viewpoint, 43 metres above the sea, there is a stone bench and a fountain, and beside it a little trough has been made as a drinking spot for the hillside's animals.

Section by section, according to Roses town council

Roses town council splits the coast into pieces, which is handy if you only want to do part of it. From the Roses lighthouse to L'Almadrava beach is 2.8 km, about 45 minutes and barely 20 metres of climb (difficulty 1 of 3). From L'Almadrava to Montjoi cove, the coastal path to Montjoi, is 4.4 km, 2 hours and 193 metres of climb (2 of 3), passing Punta Falconera, a former military base whose bunkers can still be seen from outside.

The last section, the GR-92 from Montjoi cove to Cadaqués, is the hard one: 10 km, 2 hours 50 minutes and 387 metres of climb (3 of 3), passing Calitjàs, Pelosa and Jóncols coves, by now inside the natural park.

The council warns that waymarks may not stay intact and recommends carrying a map, GPS or compass. The figures do not agree between sources either: the Cadaqués tourist office gives 22 km and 6 to 7 hours one way, rated medium; the park says 8 hours and «very demanding». To plan the day, go with the park's figure.

Water, shade and rules

According to the newspaper Ara, the stage is demanding because of the lack of shade and fresh water along the way, and it suggests avoiding the summer months or setting off early in the morning. The park asks you to check the forecast before leaving, tell someone where you are going, drink often and take care of falls when the wind is strong; in an emergency, call 112.

When the Catalan government activates level 3 of the Pla Alfa for fire risk, access to the Cap de Creus Natural Park is banned on foot, by bike or in any vehicle. The map is updated daily on the Pla Alfa website.

Inside the park it is forbidden to leave the waymarked routes, light fires, drop litter, make noise, fish from the shore or underwater, fly drones or camp; dogs must be on a lead. On the Cadaqués side, the track that starts beside the entrance to the old Rocamar hotel is for walkers and cyclists only, according to the village tourist office.
