Cadaqués beaches with a dog: the four where it is allowed and what a mistake costs

In Cadaqués dogs are not allowed on the beaches, except four: Calders, Sortell, Sant Piu V and the Passatge de l'Illa. The Town Council's Ordinance on civic coexistence sets no dates, so the ban applies all year. Taking a dog to any other beach is a minor offence fined €150.

If you come to Cadaqués with a dog, the short answer is this: it cannot go on the village beaches, except four. That is what the Town Council's Ordinance on civic coexistence says, last amended at the council meeting of 31 July 2025. The four are Calders, Sortell, Sant Piu V and the Passatge de l'Illa. Here are the rules as written, what those beaches are like and what to know before heading down with the lead in your hand.

The rule: no dogs on the beaches, except four

Article 51 of the Cadaqués Ordinance on civic coexistence and public spaces says dogs may not enter landscaped areas, parks, children's play areas or beaches. The exception, in brackets, is four beaches: Calders, Sortell, Sant Piu V and the Passatge de l'Illa.

The ordinance sets no dates. It does not mention a bathing season or hours, so the ban applies all year. It covers the whole municipality, which also includes the Cap de Creus coves that belong to Cadaqués.

The Town Council's older regulation on keeping pets says the same. It bans animals from the public beaches of Cadaqués, except on any beach where they are specifically allowed, which must be signposted.

What it costs

In the Ordinance on civic coexistence's table of fines, breaching article 52, which covers taking a dog onto a beach not meant for it or letting it go there, is a minor offence fined €150.

The pets regulation also rates dogs on beaches as a minor offence, but with fines of up to €100. Both texts are on the Town Council website and the figures do not match. What does not change is that it is forbidden.

The four beaches where dogs are allowed

Sant Pius V, spelled Sant Piu V in the ordinance, is next to Sa Conca, one kilometre from the centre. Visit Costa Brava describes it as a tiny beach, about 10 by 10 metres, of stones and gravel, usually covered in sediment from the stream that flows into it and rarely busy. The Cadaqués tourist office adds that you can reach it on foot or by car and that there is parking nearby.

Es Sortell is also in the Sa Conca area, on the point, one kilometre from the centre according to Visit Costa Brava, which gives it about 50 metres long and 10 wide, of coarse sand and pebbles. You can walk there from the village. The tourist office places it in a natural setting, with access on foot of medium difficulty.

Es Calders is about two kilometres from Cadaqués. Visit Costa Brava describes a long, narrow beach, about 50 by 6 metres, of sand and stones, and recommends it to people walking the coastal path. The Cadaqués tourist office also lists access on foot of medium difficulty.

The Passatge de l'Illa is the fourth. The ordinance names it but does not say where it is, and the tourist office's beach list has none by that name. If you want to go, ask at the tourist office or the Town Council first.

Careful with some online lists

Every summer, lists of dog beaches in Catalonia do the rounds. One from 2026 includes the Platja Gran of Cadaqués; another from 2025 includes Cala Pep Ton. The current ordinance includes neither, and the Town Council's 2025 beach use plan removed Cala Pep Ton as a duplicate beach. When in doubt, the ordinance rules.

If you are after the village beaches for yourself, without the dog, they are described one by one in our guide to the village beaches of Cadaqués.

Around the village: lead, bag and water

On public streets dogs must be on a lead or chain, wearing a collar with their registration tag, and always accompanied. Dogs whose dangerousness has been established must wear a muzzle. They may not enter landscaped areas, parks or children's play areas, and the ordinance counts a 5-metre strip around a play area as part of it.

Droppings must be picked up straight away, bagged, and put in a litter bin or household rubbish. Soiling the street with an animal's droppings is a minor offence fined €150. Feeding animals in the street or on the beaches is not allowed either.

For water: public fountains may be used to drink directly and to fill containers, so you can fill the bowl. What you cannot do is wash animals in the street or in fountains, which carries a €90 fine. And bars, restaurants and accommodation may each decide, under the regulation, whether to admit dogs.
