The Museu de Cadaqués: An Old Dance Hall That Changes Its Paintings Every Season

Photo: Kippelboy · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons

The Museu de Cadaqués, at Narcís Monturiol street, 15, is an old dance hall that runs temporary exhibitions about artists linked to the village, with Dalí very present. Its shows have included "Cadaqués de Picasso" (2010). Its hours change with the exhibition and the season, so check them first.

On a street in the old town, Narcís Monturiol, there is a white house: it is the Museu de Cadaqués. It is not a museum with a fixed collection in the usual sense, but a place whose content changes with each exhibition, almost always about artists who spent time in the village. It is one of the visits in Cadaqués with the most reviews on TripAdvisor, and a good plan for a windy or rainy day. This guide explains what it is, what it has shown in recent years and what other museums the village has.

What it is and where

The museum is at Narcís Monturiol street, 15, in the historic centre. The Cadaqués tourist catalogue presents it as an old dance hall that offers temporary exhibitions of the painter Salvador Dalí and of other leading artists linked to the village. The Town Council describes it as a museum devoted to the artists and pictorial themes connected with the village.

According to Giromus, the directory of museums in Girona, the museum has no permanent collection and works with long-running temporary exhibitions, often linked to the village's history. Catalan Wikipedia adds that, over time, it has built up a collection of its own with works by artists linked to Cadaqués, such as Ramon Pichot i Gironès.

What it has shown

Catalan Wikipedia lists some of its most notable exhibitions. In 2010, "Cadaqués de Picasso", curated by Ricard Mas and Pere Vehí, drew some 17,000 visitors. In 2011 came "Del primer Dalí al Manifest Groc (1914-1928)". In 2022 and 2023 it showed "Meli, Cadaqués, Dalí. Un instant a Cadaqués (1950-1990)", with photographs by Melitó Casals.

The Cadaqués tourism website, consulted in October 2026, describes the current exhibition as a collection of photographs of Dalí taken by his carpenter and friend Joan Vehí. As the content changes, it is worth checking what is on before you go.

Opening hours: approximate

The tourism website gives these hours: in high season, every day from 10:00 to 19:00; out of season, Monday and Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 17:30, Sunday from 11:00 to 14:00, closed on Tuesdays. It warns that they change with the year, the exhibition and the season, and the museum may close between exhibitions. Best to check at the tourist office before walking up.

The village's other museums

The Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí, in Portlligat, is the house where the painter lived. The Town Council recalls that Dalí moved into a small fishermen's hut in 1930 and kept extending it for some forty years; Giromus adds that the house is the sum of several huts bought and joined in stages, and that it opened to the public in 1997. It can only be visited with advance booking, in small groups and for about 60 minutes; tickets must be collected at the box office half an hour beforehand or the booking is lost.

Expo Dalí is a private collection of graphic work by Salvador Dalí, spread over three floors of an old building on Santa Margarida street, 24, between the beach and the church of Santa Maria, according to its own website.

The Espai Cap de Creus is inside the Cap de Creus lighthouse, from 1853, which the tourism website describes as the second oldest lighthouse in Catalonia. It is a science centre about the geology, plants and animals of the cape. The tourism website says it opens from March to November, from 10:00 to 15:00, and from 21 June to 11 September from 10:00 to 18:00.

Two museums no longer exist. The Centre d'Art Perrot-Moore, a private museum, opened in 1978 in the former Hotel Cap de Creus, moved in 1988 to the old theatre-cinema and is now closed; its works were taken to near Paris. And the mineral collection once shown at the Societat L'Amistat cannot be visited, and Giromus does not know whether it will reopen.

To round off the day, the village's tourist catalogue points out that Cadaqués also has many art galleries, and the church of Santa Maria, with its 23-metre gilded baroque altarpiece, stands at the top of the old town, the same quarter as the museum.
