How to get to Dalí's house in Portlligat: on foot, by car, bus or boat

Photo: klimmanet · CC BY 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons

From the Passeig de Cadaqués it is about a 20-minute walk: up Carrer de la Miranda to the chapel of Sant Baldiri, at 41 m, then down to Portlligat. By car, the Foundation links to a parking map and does not say whether the Portlligat car park is paid. Collect your ticket half an hour before.

The Salvador Dalí House-Museum stands on Portlligat beach, the cove next to Cadaqués, on the far side of a low hill. The easiest way there is to walk from the village: about 20 minutes. You can drive, but parking is what raises most questions and the official sources say little. This guide brings together what has been checked, plus one calculation worth doing before you leave: the time you need to be at the ticket office is not the time on your ticket.

On foot from the centre: the usual way

The Rutes Pirineus route sheet for the old path to Cap de Creus times the first stretch. It starts on the Passeig de Cadaqués, 2 m above the sea. After 5 minutes you pass Carrer de la Miranda. After 15 minutes you reach the chapel of Sant Baldiri, at 41 m, the highest point. After 20 minutes you are at the Salvador Dalí House-Museum, almost back at sea level, at 5 m.

In other words: you climb through the village streets, pass the chapel and the cemetery, and drop down to the cove. Dalí himself put it this way in his autobiography, as quoted by the Cadaqués tourism website: Portlligat is fifteen minutes from the village. Wikivoyage gives 15 to 20 minutes from the centre.

The climb is short but you feel it. Climbfinder, a website that measures gradients for cyclists, gives the street called Camí a Portlligat 0.4 km at an average gradient of 9.6%, with a stretch of 14.4%. In the heat or with children, allow a little longer. If you want to know about the white chapel halfway along, it has its own guide.

By car: what the Foundation says and what it doesn't

The Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí gives the road route: AP-7 motorway, exit 4 for Figueres towards Roses, then the C-260 and GI-614 roads to Cadaqués. For parking it gives no address: it links to a Google Maps map of car parks in Cadaqués.

The Cadaqués tourist office parking map shows a car park in Portlligat, and the Editorial Alpina map reproduced by Rutes Pirineus also marks a P by the cove. The 2026 municipal tax bylaw sets a price for it: €5 a day per vehicle (the tourist office website still lists it as free); the number of spaces is not published. Wikivoyage only says Portlligat beach is reached by road with parking nearby.

There is one more reason not to trust what you read on blogs: in June 2026, according to the Revista del Baix Empordà, the Town Council announced 655 blue-zone and green-zone spaces, to start after the summer. The report does not say whether Portlligat is included. Check the signs at the car park itself.

By bus, boat or taxi

Moventis serves Cadaqués with line 3 from Barcelona, line 4 from Girona and line 12 from Figueres. The Foundation points out that the Cadaqués bus station is 2 kilometres from the house, so you need to add the walk. The nearest train station is Figueres.

By sea, the Foundation says several companies run the Roses – Cadaqués – Portlligat route, and refers to the list of operators on visitcadaques.org. Timetables change with the season.

There are taxis in Cadaqués: the Rutes Pirineus sheet lists two for getting back from Cap de Creus. We have not found a fixed taxi rank in Portlligat.

Do the maths: leave with time to spare

The Foundation requires you to collect your ticket half an hour before your entry time. If you don't, the purchase may be cancelled. Groups go in every 10 minutes.

With the figures above, the sum is easy. If your ticket is for 12:00, you must be at the ticket office at 11:30. Walking from the Passeig takes 20 minutes, so leave by 11:10 at the latest, and preferably earlier. From the bus station, add the walk to the seafront. How to buy tickets, what they cost and what to do if they are sold out is in the tickets guide.

Two more Foundation rules that affect the trip: backpacks, medium or large bags and pushchairs are not allowed inside, and the house is not wheelchair accessible because of its architecture and setting.

Checked

Data checked in October 2026 against: Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí (FAQ and Salvador Dalí House page), Rutes Pirineus (Camí Antic de Cadaqués al Cap de Creus), Cadaqués tourist office (visitcadaques.org: Portlligat and parking map), Wikivoyage (Cadaqués), Climbfinder (Carrer Camí a Portlligat) and Revista del Baix Empordà (30 June 2026). Opening times and rules may change: check the Foundation's official website before you go.
