Cap de Creus with a dog: what the park rules actually say

Yes, you can go to Cap de Creus with a dog. The Parc Natural asks for it to be under control at all times and recommends a lead because of wildlife and herds. In the Reserva Natural Integral you stay on the signposted routes, and dogs ride the shuttle to the lighthouse on a lead, two per trip at most.

Yes, you can go to Cap de Creus with a dog. None of the rules of the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus that we have read bans them. What there is: a clear request from the park itself, a top-protection zone where you do not leave the path, and a Cadaqués by-law that affects the coves. This guide puts together what each document says, so the walk does not end badly.

What the park asks

The official map-guide of the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus says it in one sentence, under rules and advice: dogs must be under control at all times, and so the park recommends keeping them on a lead, because they can disturb wildlife and domestic herds.

Note the word: the park recommends it. In the park's Pla especial, approved in 2006, we found no article about dogs. But not compulsory does not mean it does not matter. The Cadaqués Town Council's regulation on keeping pets makes whoever has the animal responsible for any damage or nuisance it causes, natural surroundings included.

The herds are not a figure of speech. The same map-guide explains that the grasslands, one of the park's main habitats, survive thanks to grazing. A loose dog among sheep is exactly what the park wants to avoid.

The Strict Nature Reserve: not one step off the path

The Punta de Cap de Creus, where the lighthouse stands, and the Paratge de Tudela belong to the Reserva Natural Integral, the highest level of protection in a Catalan natural park. According to the park's 2026 FAQ, leaving the signposted routes is not allowed there.

The Pla especial goes further. In that zone, access is only allowed through the marked points and routes, and any activity that could harm the protected values is incompatible. On top of that, the Tudela route can only be done on foot.

With a dog the maths is simple: if it runs loose and leaves the path, you are the one who has left it. Inside the Reserve a lead is not a courtesy; it is how you keep to the path rule.

Wildlife to leave in peace

The Pla especial names some of the birds that breed in the park: the corb marí emplomallat (European shag), Bonelli's eagle, the rock dove, the European roller and the black wheatear. It also lists mammals such as the polecat and the roe deer, which was reintroduced.

On the shag, the Història Natural dels Països Catalans in the Enciclopèdia says it breeds in small numbers and very locally around Cap de Creus, in sheltered caves and rock holes. Its breeding season usually runs from February to mid-March, and by April there are nests with chicks. A good reason to keep the dog close on coastal paths in late winter and spring.

The coves: the dog stays on the path

Inside the Reserve you can walk down to the coves the signposted routes reach: cala Jugadora, cala Culip and cala Gentils. This is where the Town Council comes in. Jugadora and Gentils are on the Cadaqués beach use plan, and the town's Ordinance on civic coexistence bans dogs from all its beaches except four: Calders, Sortell, Sant Piu V and the Passatge de l'Illa.

So: you can walk to the lighthouse with your dog, but a swim at Jugadora or Gentils is for people. The ordinance sets no dates for the ban, so it applies all year.

Taking the shuttle to the lighthouse with a dog

On days when the lighthouse road is closed to cars, you go up by shuttle from the Corral d'en Morell car park. The park's 2026 FAQ is clear: dogs that are not dangerous can ride on a lead, with a maximum of two dogs per trip. Potentially dangerous dogs cannot ride, as set by the Cadaqués Town Council regulation.

Times, fares and the calendar of closed days change every season. They are explained in our guide to reaching the lighthouse when the road is closed; check them on the park's website before you go.

Water, and days when nobody goes in

The park reminds visitors to bring proper footwear, water and a planned route, so as not to get lost and to judge distance and time properly. With a dog, the water is for two.

Some days nobody goes in. If level 4 of the Pla Alfa fire-prevention plan is activated for the massif, access to the natural area is not allowed: no walking or cycling on the park's tracks and routes, nor on the road to the point. That level depends on the fire danger at the time.

Checked

Facts checked in October 2026 with: the official map-guide of the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus (rules and advice), the park's FAQ on access to the point (2026), the Pla especial for the protection of the natural environment and landscape of Cap de Creus (2006), Cadaqués Town Council (regulation on keeping pets, Ordinance on civic coexistence and public spaces amended in 2025, and 2025 beach use plan) and the Enciclopèdia (Història Natural dels Països Catalans, European shag).

No. Jugadora is on the Cadaqués beach use plan, and the Ordinance on civic coexistence bans dogs from all beaches except Calders, Sortell, Sant Piu V and the Passatge de l'Illa.

Does my dog have to be on a lead in the park?
