Gijón campus (Viesques): what is in each building, which bus goes in and where to study

The University of Oviedo's Gijón Campus, next to Viesques, brings together the engineering school, the Escuela Superior de Marina Civil and the nursing school; the Jovellanos faculty is in the Laboral. EMTUSA routes 2, 4, 18 and 71 have stops inside the campus, and the 4 only runs that far on term-time weekdays.

Anyone coming to Gijón for a year or a term at the University of Oviedo nearly always ends up in the same place: the campus on the east side of the city that everyone searches for as the Viesques campus. Here is what is in each building, which bus goes right up to the lecture halls and where to study, using what the university and the City Council publish.

One campus, two homes: Viesques and the Laboral

The University of Oviedo calls it the Gijón Campus and places it in the Milla del Conocimiento Margarita Salas, in the parishes of Somió, Bernueces and Cabueñes, close to the Viesques neighbourhood.

It is made up of four centres: the Escuela Politécnica de Ingeniería de Gijón (engineering), the Escuela Superior de Marina Civil (merchant navy), the Facultad de Comercio, Turismo y Ciencias Sociales «Jovellanos» (business, tourism and social sciences) and the Escuela de Enfermería de Gijón (nursing), an affiliated centre. The three schools have their own buildings on the campus; the Jovellanos faculty, by contrast, is in the old Universidad Laboral building, now Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura. How to get to the Laboral and what is inside is in its guide.

The engineering school teaches, among others, degrees in Information Technology Engineering, Telecommunication Technologies and Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Data Science and Engineering, plus master's degrees in the same fields.

What each building is: lecture blocks, Polivalente and departments

The two lecture blocks are in the middle of the campus. The Aulario Sur is the administration building: it houses the Campus Administration, the Oficina de Atención, the Student Section and the Finance and Research Section. The university gives its service hours as 9:00 to 14:00, and 9:00 to 13:00 in summer.

The Aulario Norte holds the Biblioteca de Tecnología y Empresa, teaching and computer rooms and the IT Service staff. The Edificio Polivalente, which comes up a lot in searches, is the address of the engineering school: «Edificio Polivalente, Módulo 1, Planta Baja».

The campus is completed by two department buildings, the Este, with the Department of Energy, and the Oeste, with Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Construction, and the Científico Técnico building, home to the OTRI and to offices run by Gijón Impulsa, the City Council's company.

Which bus goes into the campus

According to the EMTUSA timetables published by Gijón City Council, four routes have stops inside the campus, called EPI Gijón, Escuela de Marina and Aulario: the 2, the 4, the 18 and the express 71. The 35 also calls at EPI Gijón and Escuela de Marina, but only on term-time weekdays: from Nuevo Roces towards the hospital between 7:20 and 8:20, and back between 13:20 and 14:20.

The 4 is the one from the centre: it starts at El Lauredal, passes El Parchís and on term-time weekdays runs to Campus Universitario roughly every 15 minutes, from 7:08 to 21:20. On weekdays outside term and at weekends it stops short at Viesques (Albert Einstein), every 20 minutes; on those days the 2 and the 18 go up to the lecture halls, and the 71 on weekdays.

The 18 is the most frequent of the routes crossing the campus: it runs from Nuevo Gijón to Hospital de Cabueñes roughly every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Its stops include Sedes, Centro de Salud de Pumarín, Sanz Crespo and Estación Ferrocarril. The 2, from El Corte Inglés to the hospital, runs every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 40 on holidays, and the express 71 leaves Gran Capitán every 30 minutes on weekdays and has no service at weekends.

The timetable sheets distinguish term-time and non-term days, and EMTUSA itself asks passengers to confirm exact times in its official app or on the stop displays. To choose where to live by bus route, the guide to where to stay in Gijón goes through the neighbourhoods one by one.

From Oviedo or Avilés, every day

The Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias groups on its website, under «Campus de Gijón (Viesques-Laboral)», the intercity services to and from the campus: the first thing to check if the plan is to live in Oviedo or Avilés and commute.

By train, Cercanías line C-1 links Oviedo with Gijón-Sanz Crespo, according to Renfe's June 2025 map, and in Gijón the 18 stops at Sanz Crespo and carries on to the campus without changing.

Where to study: the libraries

The Biblioteca de Tecnología y Empresa, in the Aulario Norte, serves the engineering and merchant navy schools. It has 561 reading places in four rooms and the collection of UNE standards. Its Spanish opening-hours page gives Monday to Friday 8:30 to 19:45, closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays; the English page for the same library says 8:30 to 20:30 and Saturdays 9:00 to 13:45, reading only, and adds a reading room in the Edificio Polivalente. Until they match, check at the desk.

The Biblioteca Jovellanos, belonging to the business faculty, is inside the Laboral grounds: three floors, 290 reading places and a computer room, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 19:45.

At weekends you have to leave the campus: the Biblioteca Pública Jovellanos, in the centre, also opens on Saturdays and Sundays, and some municipal neighbourhood libraries on Saturday mornings. Hours and stops are in the guide to remote working in Gijón.

Checked

Checked in October 2026 against: the University of Oviedo's Gijón Campus page, the engineering school page, the University of Oviedo Library's opening-hours page (in Spanish) and library page (in English), the timetables of EMTUSA routes 2, 4, 18, 35 and 71 published by Gijón City Council, the Consorcio de Transportes de Asturias website and Renfe's Cercanías Asturias map (June 2025). Bus fares and youth discounts are not given: the EMTUSA website was not responding when we checked.
