In winter Barcelona has average highs of about 14 degrees and lows of 5, according to AEMET, with around 4 rainy days a month. From December to February there are Christmas lights and street theatre, the Copa Nadal swim in the port on the 25th, the Three Kings parade on 5 January, Els Tres Tombs, Santa Eulàlia and Llum BCN.
Anyone who spends the winter in Barcelona soon learns two things: the heavy coat is almost surplus to requirements, and the city does not stop, it just changes calendar. Here is the weather, with AEMET's figures, and what happens from December to February, with dates from official websites checked in October 2026.
The weather, in numbers
AEMET's climate normals for the Barcelona airport station, 1981-2010, say this: in January, the coldest month, the mean temperature is 9.2 degrees, with average highs of 13.6 and average lows of 4.7. December and February are almost the same: highs of 14.3 and lows of 5.7 and 5.4.
It rains little and on few days: about 37 litres per square metre in January, spread over 3.7 rainy days on average; 4.4 days in December and 4.0 in February. And there is sun: 141 hours in December, 151 in January and 163 in February. Humidity hovers around 70 %, which is why mornings feel colder than the thermometer says. In practice: a warm jacket and layers, with a small umbrella and sunglasses in the same pocket.
December: lights, nativity scenes and theatre in the square
Christmas starts in the street. In 2025 the Christmas lights were on from Sunday to Thursday from 17:30 to 1:00, and until 2:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the eves of public holidays, with routes taking in fountains, municipal markets and buildings such as the obelisk on Passeig de Gràcia or the Torre de les Aigües. In the cathedral square the nativity fair goes up, which we cover in our Fira de Santa Llúcia guide.
From 20 to 30 December 2025, Plaça de Catalunya hosted the Barcelona Christmas Festival, free, from 11:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:30: family theatre in the morning, circus and dance in the afternoon and music at dusk, with 357 performances. The City Council notes on its Christmas website that the 2026 programme comes out in November.
At home, tradition rules: the tió, the Sant Esteve lunch of cannelloni on the 26th, the caganer hidden in the nativity scene and the pastorets plays, according to the City Council's traditions page. And on the morning of the 25th some people jump in the water: the Copa Nadal of the Club Natació Barcelona, about 200 metres swimming in the port in front of the Moll de la Fusta, has been held since 1908, reached its 116th edition in 2025 and has a popular race open to all ages.
New Year's Eve and the Three Kings
On the night of 31 December 2025, the New Year's Eve show took place on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, from 23:50 to 0:10, free, with fireworks, drones and music; more details in our Font Màgica guide. The sportiest, the City Council says, end the year running the Cursa dels Nassos and start the new one with a dip in the Mediterranean.
On 5 January, from 18:00, the Three Kings parade goes through the centre. Before that, from 18 December to 6 January, the Three Kings Fair fills a stretch of the Gran Via. And after the Kings, in 2026 there were Christmas tree collection points from 7 to 17 January, so the trees could end up serving the city's green spaces.
January and February: horses, the saint and the light
January has the animal parade of Els Tres Tombs, and February the city's winter festival, Santa Eulàlia, with giants, correfocs and castells around the 12th. For music, January sees the start of the organ season at Santa Maria del Mar.
The big date in February is Llum BCN, the festival of light art: its sixteenth edition runs from 5 to 7 February 2027, with installations in the streets and squares around the Disseny Hub and Poblenou, under the artistic direction of the architects Xevi Bayona and Núria Prieto. You walk it at night, like an open-air exhibition.
Winter opening hours worth knowing
From 1 November to 31 March, gated parks close from 19:00, according to the city's parks website; they open between 7:30 and 10:00 depending on the park. Some venues change their hours with the season: the Mirador Torre Glòries, for example, closes on Tuesdays in winter and at 18:30, as we explain in our mirador guide.
There are no lifeguards on the beaches out of season, though the rules still apply, as we explain in our Barceloneta flag guide. And if you are staying a few months, winter is a good time to get a library card: it is free and gives discounts at museums and theatres, which is exactly what you fancy when it gets dark early.
