Cap de Creus by bike: where you can ride and where you cannot

Photo: Teresa Grau Ros from Barcelona · CC BY-SA 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons

You can ride to Cap de Creus on the tarmac road to the point, even on days when it is closed to cars and motorbikes, because a bicycle is not considered a motor vehicle. The routes at the point and in the Paratge de Tudela are walking-only, and the park recommends its cycling routes 12 and 13.

You can reach Cap de Creus by bike, and in summer the bike even has the edge: when the lighthouse road closes to cars and motorbikes, pedals keep going. But the natural park has clear rules on where you can ride and where you cannot, and not all of them are obvious on the ground. This guide brings them together from what the park itself publishes for 2026: where yes, where no, which tracks close by season, what happens with fire risk and what to do about the tramontana.

The lighthouse road: yes, even when it is restricted

The park’s questions on access to the point, in their 2026 version, put it plainly: bike access is open as always along the tarmac road to the Punta de Cap de Creus, because a bicycle is not considered a motor vehicle. The camera-enforced restriction applies to cars and motorbikes, not to you.

The same source adds something that changes the plan: if you want to reach the point by bike, you must use the road. The old lighthouse path and the GR11 stay open, but for walkers. How to get up with the road closed, by shuttle or on foot, is in the guide on reaching the Cap de Creus lighthouse.

Where the bike stays parked

The Punta de Cap de Creus and the Paratge de Tudela are part of the Reserva Natural Integral de Cap de Creus, the highest level of protection within a natural park in Catalonia, and there you may not leave the waymarked paths. According to the park, the circular route at the point and the Paratge de Tudela route can only be done on foot.

For that there is bike parking next to the Paratge de Tudela information point: leave the bike and carry on walking. On the Roses side the same applies to Cap Norfeu, also a Reserva Natural Integral: its route cannot be done by bike.

Where you can: routes 12 and 13

In the 2026 questions on the Roses coves, the park recommends that cyclists use its two waymarked cycling routes, 12 and 13. Route 12 is the tarmac road to Montjoi, in Roses.

That road is also regulated in summer, but only for vehicles with four or more wheels: from 1 July to 31 August 2026, between 9:30 and 16:00, a barrier at the Mas de la Torre d'en Sastre stops cars. Bikes go through as always. The park does not describe route 13 on its website, so ask at an information point before looking for it.

Tracks that close by season

The park’s access page warns that some tracks in the drivable network may be closed for part of the year, especially in spring and summer, when fire risk is highest and coincides with the breeding season of threatened species. Mas Ventós - Sant Onofre is closed all year; Mas Marés - Pla de Gates, from 1 March to 30 September; Port de la Selva - Taballera i Perafita, from 1 April to 1 October.

The clearest case for cyclists is Punta Falconera - Carretera a Montjoi: it is temporarily closed because of unstable ground, and the park specifies that the closure includes bikes and walkers. For the other tracks the page refers to the network of drivable roads; if you are unsure about a particular one, ask the park before setting off.

Pla Alfa and tramontana: the days to stay in

The Pla Alfa is the Agents Rurals’ system grading forest-fire danger on five levels, from 0 to 4. With level 4 active in the Cap de Creus massif, access to the countryside is not allowed, nor is cycling on the park’s tracks or routes, and on the road to the point you may go neither on foot nor by bike. The level is published on the Pla Alfa website or by phoning 012.

The other threat is the wind. The leaflet for the routes at the point notes that the tramontana, the north wind, can exceed 150 km/h, and warns of the risk of falls, especially when it blows. On a narrow, exposed road, a day of strong tramontana is a day to leave the bike at home.

When there are fewer cars and how much climbing

Days with restricted motor access are the best for riding towards the lighthouse. What is left of 2026 according to the park: in October, the 17th, 18th, 24th, 25th and 31st, from 9:30 to 19:00; in November, only the 1st; December, to be decided. At the Corral d'en Morell car park there is a park information centre where you can ask.

The park does not publish a profile of the road. As a guide to the terrain, its walking route 19, from Cadaqués to Cap de Creus, is 9.2 km with 235 m of total ascent. It is not the bike route, but it shows the cape is anything but flat.

What happens if level 4 of the Pla Alfa is active?
