Cadaqués by Motorhome or Camper Van: Where to Park and Why You Can't Sleep on the Street

Photo: Bocachete · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons

In Cadaqués, staying overnight or camping in a motorhome, camper or van is banned across the whole municipality without express council authorisation: a 200 € fine under the traffic bylaw and 250 € under the bylaw on public behaviour. For parking, the 2026 tax bylaw sets 50 € for 48 hours for motorhomes at the Portlligat car park.

Cadaqués gets plenty of motorhomes and camper vans, and the village rules are clear on one point: you do not sleep on the street. This guide brings together what the council's bylaws say, which car park has a motorhome rate, what happens with vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and where the campsite is. Everything was checked in October 2026, with the official pages to hand so you can confirm before you set off.

Overnight stays on the street: banned across the municipality

The Cadaqués traffic bylaw of 2021 puts it plainly in article 45: camping, staying overnight, picnicking or lighting fires, whether with vehicles, tents, sleeping bags or anything else, is banned across the whole municipality unless the council expressly authorises it. The fine is 200 €, a serious offence. Paid within 15 calendar days of notification, it gets a 50 % reduction and drops to 100 €.

The bylaw on public behaviour, in its consolidated text last amended by the council on 31 July 2025, says it again: camping without express authorisation anywhere in the municipality, with towed or self-propelled caravans, tents, vans or similar, carries a 250 € fine.

Parked, yes, but not living outside

Parking a motorhome where the signs allow it is not illegal. What the traffic bylaw bans is living outside the vehicle: taking out tables, chairs or any other gear, and putting out awnings, parasols or anything that sticks out from the vehicle. It also bans emptying waste water and leaving pets outside the vehicle. Putting out the table costs 200 €, the same as staying overnight.

The bylaw on public behaviour repeats these bans in almost the same words, in its rules for parks, gardens and beaches.

The motorhome rate: Portlligat, 50 € for 48 hours

The only motorhome price the council publishes is in its tax bylaw number 16, in force since 1 January 2026. Under the Portlligat car park and signposted municipal car parks it sets these rates: 5 € a day for vehicles, 50 € for motorhomes for a 48-hour stay, and 200 € for coaches.

Two warnings. The tourist office website still says the Portlligat car park is free; the 2026 bylaw is what counts. And the tax bylaw prices parking, but it does not say you may sleep inside. The ban on overnight stays without express authorisation is still on the books. If you want to spend the night, ask the Policía Local before taking anything for granted.

Portlligat is 1.5 km from the centre, according to the tourist office, next to the Salvador Dalí house museum.

The big car park at the entrance and its height limit

As you come into the village there is a turn-off to the Saba car park at Riera de Sant Vicenç. Its official listing says it is open 24 hours, has 506 spaces and has a maximum permitted height of 2.4 metres. The tourist office, on the other hand, says this car park is set up for all kinds of vehicles, caravans and buses included.

The two do not quite match, so ask before driving in with a tall vehicle. Saba does not publish its rates on that listing. For the village's other car parks, see the guide to parking in Cadaqués.

Over 3.5 tonnes: different rules

If your motorhome is over 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass, check its registration papers before you go. Article 53 of the traffic bylaw does not allow heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, or trailers of any kind, to park on public roads or in spaces not specially authorised. Their authorised area is the Polígono Industrial de Cadaqués, plus any set by mayoral decree.

Article 52 adds that vehicles over 3.5 tonnes may not drive through the old town.

The campsite

The wecamp Cadaqués campsite says on its website that it does not allow camping with your own tents on its pitches, but that it welcomes people travelling by motorhome or camper van. The CamperContact listing places it on Camí Port Lligat. The page we checked does not give opening dates: confirm them when you book.

Getting there, and what is closed

The tourist office describes two routes. From the AP-7, exit 4, take the C-260 towards Roses and then the GI-614, which ends in Cadaqués: about 50 minutes from Figueres. Or take the N-260 to Llançà, the GI-612 to Port de la Selva and then the GI-613: 13 km and about 20 minutes from there.

Two roads are no use. The Jóncols track between Cadaqués and Roses is for walking or cycling only: vehicles are not allowed. And the road to Cap de Creus is closed to motorhomes, according to the tourist office. To visit the cape you leave the vehicle in the village.

Checked

Data checked in October 2026 against: the Ajuntament de Cadaqués (2021 traffic bylaw; bylaw on public behaviour and use of public spaces, 2025 text; tax bylaw number 16 for 2026), the Cadaqués tourist office (visitcadaques.org: car parks, how to get there), Saba (Riera de Sant Vicenç car park listing), wecamp (Cadaqués) and CamperContact (wecamp Cadaqués).
