The Boqueria, what time: Monday to Saturday hours, closed on Sundays and when to go shopping

The Boqueria opens Monday to Saturday, from 8:00 to 20:30, and does not open on Sunday. Public holidays are not in its hours: the Institut Municipal de Mercats publishes the December long weekend and Christmas changes every year at the end of November. You can eat inside at its bars and restaurants.

The Boqueria is the municipal market with the most visitors in Barcelona: 22,721,796 in 2025, according to the City Council. With numbers like that, knowing when it opens is not enough; you need to know when you can actually shop there in peace. For anyone living in the city for a few months who wants to use it as a market, not just look at it, this guide gathers the official hours, what happens on Sundays and public holidays and the rules worth knowing.

The official hours

The market's website puts it in one line: Monday to Saturday, from 8:00 to 20:30. Inside there is an information point, in an old modernista stall on the sales floor, open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 15:00, which also answers on 93 318 20 17.

Watch the afternoons. The building's hours are continuous, but the City Council lists the Boqueria among the ten municipal markets with afternoon opening from Tuesday to Friday. If you go late in the day, those are the days with the most choice.

And on Sunday?

The official hours run Monday to Saturday and do not include Sunday: the market does not open that day. Bear it in mind if you arrive for a weekend and plan to leave the visit until your last day.

If Sunday is your shopping day, the fix is to bring it forward to Saturday morning or, better, to a weekday.

Public holidays and the December festivities

The website's opening hours do not mention public holidays, and we found no official calendar published for 2026. What the Institut Municipal de Mercats does every year is publish, at the end of November, a notice with the markets' changed hours over the December long weekend and Christmas: the 2025 one came out on 28 November.

For a specific holiday, the practical thing is to ask at the information point or check the market's Instagram account, @la_boqueria, which is the one linked from its official website.

When to shop like a local

One rule gives a clue. Since 2017, the Boqueria has restricted entry to organised groups of 15 people or more on Fridays and Saturdays between April and October. If the market itself protects those days for shoppers, they are the busiest. If you can choose, calm shopping is on weekdays, and in the morning, when the information point is also open.

The entrance matters too. The City Council describes the one on plaça de la Gardunya as the natural entrance for local residents, and the refurbishment plans to make it a second main entrance, on a par with the one on the Rambla. Next to that square, at carrer de les Floristes de la Rambla, 8, is the market car park, with 450 spaces.

A useful detail: the toilets, on floor -1 of the office building, are free if you show a purchase receipt; without one they cost 0.50 euros.

Can you eat at the Boqueria?

Yes. The market's website explains that many visitors take the chance to enjoy food prepared in its bars and restaurants with produce from the market itself. Eating and drinking is in fact one of the market's official sectors, alongside fish and seafood, butchers or fruit and vegetables.

To find your way there is the Boqueriamap, a free quarterly map showing the stalls and the services and dining area. You can pick it up at the information point and, on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00, at the main entrance.

What is changing is the balance. The new internal rules set a minimum of 50 % traditional produce and a maximum of 50 % prepared food; we cover this in detail in our guide to the Boqueria's history and refurbishment. Prepared food will have to come from the market's own produce, cold or at room temperature, cut or ready to eat.

What you will find under works

Since after the summer of 2026 there have been operational works: new lighting in the logistics area and new public toilets on the market floor itself, larger and with an accessible family toilet. The central fish island will also be refurbished; while that lasts, its stalls are expected to move to plaça de la Gardunya. The City Council says keeping trade going will be the priority wherever possible.

Checked

Data checked on 15 October 2026 on the market's official website (boqueria.barcelona: opening hours, information point, services and the refurbishment news of 27 August 2026, also published by the City Council) and on Barcelona City Council's website (markets with afternoon opening and Christmas opening notices). Holiday hours change every year: confirm them before you go.
